How to Calculate Fence Materials

Accurately calculating fence materials prevents costly mistakes and ensures you have everything needed before starting. The key is understanding how fence sections relate to post spacing, and how different fence types affect your material list.

Understanding Fence Sections and Posts

The number of fence sections (panels between posts) is determined by dividing your total fence length by the post spacing. For example, a 100-foot fence with 6-foot spacing creates approximately 16 sections, requiring 17 posts (one at each end and one between each section). Add 2 additional posts per gate for gate frames.

Post Spacing Guidelines

  • Wood fences: Standard 6-foot spacing for privacy and picket styles. Can stretch to 8 feet for lighter designs.
  • Chain link: Typically 8 to 10-foot spacing. Wider spacing works because chain link fabric has minimal wind load.
  • Vinyl: 6 to 8-foot spacing depending on panel design and height.

Wood Fence Types and Materials

Privacy fences use boards (pickets) with minimal gap between them, typically 3.5 inches wide with no spacing. Picket fences have space between pickets (usually 1.5 inches) for a lighter, more open appearance. Both styles use horizontal rails (2-3 depending on height) to frame and support the pickets.

Chain Link and Vinyl Costs

Chain link fencing costs less upfront (typically $8-15 per linear foot installed) but requires maintenance. Vinyl fencing costs more initially ($20-40 per linear foot) but lasts longer and needs minimal maintenance. Both eliminate the need for picket calculations and simplify material ordering.

Concrete for Post Holes

Standard fence post holes are dug 3 feet deep and 10 inches wide. Each hole typically requires 1.5 to 2 bags of 60-pound concrete mix. Total concrete needed = (number of posts) × 1.5 bags. Budget concrete costs at $6-8 per 60-lb bag.

Accounting for Gates

Each gate opening (typically 3 feet wide) reduces your picket line but requires two additional posts for the gate frame. This is automatically handled in the calculator—simply enter the number of gates and the remaining fence length is adjusted accordingly.

Common Fence Project Costs

  • 100 linear feet of 6-foot wood privacy fence: Approximately $1,500-2,500 in materials (posts, pickets, rails, concrete)
  • 100 linear feet of chain link fence: Approximately $800-1,200 in materials
  • 100 linear feet of vinyl fence: Approximately $2,500-4,000 in materials
  • Labor typically adds 50-100% to material costs depending on ground difficulty and local rates

Pro Tips for Fence Planning

  • Always add 10% waste factor for material damage and fitting errors
  • Check local building codes for setback requirements and permit needs before purchasing
  • Rent a power auger for post hole digging—it saves time and effort on longer fences
  • Plan gates at natural corners or landscape features when possible
  • Set posts in concrete during cooler months (spring/fall) when concrete cures properly
